Coffee house melodies live with virtuoso musicians – this is the Pista Dankó Memorial Day

Ha volt nap, amikor megérte nyitva tartani a fülünket Budapesten, az tavaly június 15-e volt. A Dankó Pista Emléknapon ugyanis a főváros számos éttermében, kávézójában, cukrászdájában felcsendült a hamisítatlan kávéházi cigányzene. A zenészek már készülnek, hiszen ismét megrendezik az eseményt. Idén június 14-én, szombaton immár országszerte élvezhetik a zenészek virtuóz játékát.

Teltház volt

„A tavalyi Dankó Pista Emléknapon a Főőrség Kávéházban játszottam a zenekarommal a budai Várban – idézte fel élményeit Lakatos Miklós kiváló prímás, a Muzsikáló Magyarország program egyik nagykövete. – Teltház volt, az előadásunkra nagyon sokan voltak kíváncsiak. Akik bejöttek ebédelni, azok az étkezés végén nem is akartak elmenni, ültek és hallgatták a dalokat egymás után. Szünetet kellett tartanunk, hogy a közönség kicserélődhessen, és helyet foglalhassanak a vacsorára érkezők.

 

„Mi nem csak magyar nótát játszunk, számtalan más műfajból is merítünk – igaz, általában egy cigánymuzsikus ül vagy áll a hangszer mögött” – emelte ki Lakatos Miklós, aki azt is megerősítette, hogy a kávéházi cigányzenét játszó, komoly tudású muzsikusoknak óriási segítség volt a Dankó Pista Emléknap sikere. Ha az éttermek, bárok, kávéházak egyre többen úgy látnák, megéri élő zenét biztosítani a finom falatok mellé, sok zenész ismét a hivatásának élhetne, és megint apáról fiúra szállhatna ez a szakma. Az emléknap nem csupán egy szép gesztus a múlt felé, hanem jövőbemutató közösségépítő, örökségmegőrző küldetés is.

 

Zenével telt meg a város

Az ország számos pontjáról érkeztek tavaly a kávéházi cigányzenét játszó zenekarok, hogy a budapesti éttermek, kávéházak, bárok teraszain felelevenítsék a kort, amikor a vendéglátást természetes módon kísérte a muzsikaszó. A cél az, hogy újra reflektorfénybe kerüljön a magyar éttermi és kávéházi cigányzene, az a különleges zenei világ, amely generációk óta hozzátartozik Budapest hangulatához. A hagyomány folytatódik, idén is a legendás prímás, Dankó Pista születésnapjához legközelebb eső szombaton, egészen pontosan 14-én csendül fel újra a muzsika az éttermekben – és most már nemcsak a fővárosban, hanem országszerte számos vidéki étteremben is.

If there was a day when it was worth keeping your ears open in Budapest, it was the 15th of June last year, when authentic Gypsy music was played in various restaurants, coffee houses and pastry shops of the capital city on the Pista Dankó Memorial Day. The performers are already preparing as the event will be held again: this year on the 14th of June, Saturday, when you can enjoy the virtuoso performance of the musicians, this time in all parts of the country.

No chairs were left empty

“On last year’s Pista Dankó Memorial Day, I played with my band at the Royal Guard Coffee House in the Buda Castle,” recalled Miklós Lakatos, an excellent bandleader and one of the ambassadors of the Musical Hungary programme. “It was a full house, and many people were curious about our performance. Those who came in for lunch didn’t want to leave at the end of the meal, they just sat there and listened to the songs one after the other. We had to take a break so that the audience could change and those arriving for dinner could take their seats.”

“We not only play Hungarian nóta but also draw from countless other genres, although usually a Gypsy musician sits or stands behind the instrument,” pointed out Miklós Lakatos, who also confirmed that the success of the Pista Dankó Memorial Day was a huge help to highly skilled musicians who play Gypsy music in coffee houses. If more and more restaurants, bars and coffee houses realised that it is worth playing live music alongside the delicious meals, many musicians could once again make a living from their profession, which could once again be passed down from father to son. The Memorial Day is not only a beautiful gesture towards the past but also a forward-looking mission that builds community and preserves heritage.

Music filled the city

Last year, bands playing coffee house Gypsy music came from many parts of the country to revive the era when music naturally accompanied hospitality on the terraces of restaurants, coffee houses and bars in Budapest. The goal is to put the spotlight back on Hungarian restaurant and coffee house Gypsy music, this special musical world that has been part of the city’s charms for generations. The tradition continues and music will be back in restaurants again this year on a Saturday closest to the birthday of the legendary band leader Pista Dankó, exactly on the 14th of June – this time not only in the capital city but also in many rural restaurants across the country.
