A Dankó Pista Emléknapon a hegedűszó elnyomja a város zaját, és egy napra az éttermi, kávéházi vendégek figyelme a cigányzenére irányul. Visszahoz a vendéglátóhelyekre egy régi-régi hagyományt – nem nosztalgiázva, hanem új lendületet adva neki, megismertetve azt azokkal a generációkkal – és az ide utazó külföldiekkel – is, akik korábban nem találkoztak ezzel a különlegességgel, sőt, még akár a cimbalom is idegen hangszernek tűnt számukra. A kávéházi cigányzene ezen a napon nem múlt idő, hanem nagyon is élő és átélhető jelen. Így lesz ez idén június 14-én is.
A magyar közönség többnyire tisztában van azzal, hogy a kávéházi cigányzenészek fejből, kotta nélkül elképesztő mennyiségű dalt el tudnak játszani, de a külföldiek – ahogy Lakatos Miklós híres prímás, a Muzsikáló Magyarország program egyik nagykövete is tapasztalta – alaposan rácsodálkoznak erre. „Ami meglepett – emlékszik vissza Lakatos Miklós –, hogy sok gyerek elámult, mi az a cimbalom, a legtöbben nem ismerték ezt a hangszert. A kisebbeknek kifejezetten kedvenc mesefilmjeik, rajzfilmjeik zeneszámait játszottuk, néztek ránk nagy szemekkel, amikor rájöttek, hogy ismerik ezeket a dallamokat. Nem is tágítottak mellőlünk, amíg a szülők engedték, hogy maradjanak, a leglelkesebb tagjai voltak a közönségnek.” Nem véletlen, hogy a kávéházi cigányzene arról híres, hogy a magyar nóták, az opera-, az operett- és a filmslágerek mellett a legújabb popszámokat is képesek a zenészek virtuóz módon előadni.
A zene híd, amely összeköt
2025-ben is lesz Dankó Pista Emléknap, és új vendéglátóipari egységek is jelentkeztek, hogy szívesen csatlakoznak, azaz szeretnék, hogy náluk is hallgathassanak a vendégek az ebéd és a vacsora mellé cigányzenét. A jó muzsika hangulatot teremt, kapcsolatot épít a vendégek között, segít letenni a telefont, megérkezni a jelenbe.
A profi muzsikusok mindig figyelnek arra, hogy az egyes asztaloknál milyen a vendégek hangulata: látni, ha megmozdul a kezük a ritmusra, ha valamelyik dal felkelti az érdeklődésüket. „Amikor keringőt játszottunk, egy teljes turistacsoport kezdett táncolni a Várban” – tette hozzá Lakatos Miklós. Mivel a zenészek ilyenkor nem színpadon játszanak, sokkal közvetlenebb viszony alakul ki a fellépők és a közönség között. Ha egyre több étteremben, kávéházban állandó programmá válna az élő zene, akkor a külföldiek évről évre tudnák, hogy melyik zenekart hol keressék, hol hallgathatják meg újra.

On the Pista Dankó Memorial Day the sound of violins will drown out the city noise, and for one day, the attention of restaurant and coffee house guests will turn to Gypsy music. This brings back an old tradition to the catering establishments, not nostalgically but with a new impetus, introducing it to generations and foreign visitors who have not encountered this specialty and perhaps they have never even seen a cimbalom before. On this day, coffee house Gypsy music will not be a thing of the past, but a live experience of the present. This will also be the case on the 14th of June this year.
Most of the Hungarian audience knows that coffee house Gypsy musicians can play an amazing number of songs by heart, without sheet music, but – as the famous band leader Miklós Lakatos, one of the ambassadors of the Musical Hungary programme, also experienced – foreigners are very much amazed by this. “What surprised me last year,” recalls Miklós Lakatos, “was that many children were amazed to see a cimbalom; most of them didn’t know this instrument. We played songs from popular fairy tale films and cartoons for the little ones, and they looked at us with eyes wide open when they realised that they knew these melodies. They stuck around as long as their parents let them stay, and they were the most enthusiastic members of the audience.” It is no coincidence that coffee house Gypsy music is famous for the virtuoso performance of the latest pop songs as well as Hungarian songs, opera, operetta and greatest movie songs.
Music is a bridge that connects
The Pista Dankó Memorial Day will also be celebrated in 2025, and new catering units have also expressed their willingness to join so that their guests can listen to Gypsy music while having lunch and dinner. Good music creates a special atmosphere, builds connections between guests, helps them put down their phone and arrive in the present.
Professional musicians always watch the mood of the guests at the tables to see when their hands start moving to the rhythm and a particular song sparks their interest. “When we played a waltz, a whole group of tourists started dancing in the Castle,” added Miklós Lakatos. Since the musicians do not perform on a stage, a much more direct relationship develops between the performers and the audience. If live music became a permanent programme in more and more restaurants and coffee houses, foreigners would know which band to look for and where to listen to them again year after year.
